Enhancing Care for a Client with Severe Dementia

Client Background:

Mrs. D, an 82-year-old woman, was diagnosed with severe dementia and required extensive support to manage her daily activities and ensure her safety. Her family sought the assistance of U&I Care by Kerala Ayurveda Centre to provide live-in care, aiming to maintain her quality of life in the comfort of her own home.

Initial Carer Placement:

Understanding the complexities associated with dementia, we assigned a carer with experience in dementia care to Mrs. D. However, despite the carer’s qualifications and skills, the personality match was not ideal. Mrs. D’s condition required not only expertise but also a unique personal connection to ensure her comfort and cooperation.

Adjusting to Client Needs:

Recognising the mismatch, we promptly addressed the situation by introducing a new carer. This time, we chose a registered nurse with extensive experience in dementia care. The decision was also influenced by the progression of Mrs. D’s dementia, which had recently worsened, necessitating a higher level of medical and emotional support.

Outcome:

The new carer established a strong rapport with Mrs. D, significantly improving her emotional and mental well-being. The carer’s nursing background provided an added layer of medical supervision, which was crucial as Mrs. D’s dementia advanced. With the tailored and compassionate approach, Mrs. D exhibited improved mood stability and a reduction in agitation episodes.

Continuous Evaluation and Support:

At U&I Care, our approach involves continuous evaluation and adjustment of care plans to align with the evolving needs of our clients. For Mrs. D, we maintained regular assessments and family consultations to ensure that the care provided remained effective and compassionate. The integration of holistic wellness practices, including Ayurvedic therapies and personalised activities, further contributed to her overall well-being.

Conclusion:

This case highlights the importance of personalised care and the ability to adapt swiftly to meet the unique needs of individuals with dementia. At U&I Care by Kerala Ayurveda Centre, we are committed to providing high-quality, compassionate care tailored to the specific requirements of our clients, ensuring their dignity and comfort in their own homes.
